The 23-year old beauty queen who is originally from Brazil and moved to Canada when she was 12 was crowned as Miss Canada Universe 2009 at John Bassett Theatre in Toronto, May 16.

Have you noticed that lately Canada is not selecting pure Canadians to represent this country in international pageants? I just noticed that their recent beauty titleholders are of mix blood. Most of them are immigrants.

Natalie Glebova who won Miss Universe 2005 is from Russia and Miss Earth 2007, Jessica Trisko is of Filipino heritage. Miss World 2003 First Princess, Nazanin Afshin-Jam has Iranian parents.

Going back to Miss Canada Universe 2009, Valente is a student of languages at York University. She is 1.72 meters tall.

The first runner up is a contestant from Canada's Next Top Model. She is 26-year old Ylenia Aurucci. Ksenia Mezenina is second runner up. Neda Derakshan is third runner up while fourth runner up is Isabelle Grastin.

Even the courts of Valente are not pure Canadians, I guess. Their names sound Russian. I know for a fact that Neda has Iranian blood because I posted a blog entry about her here.

There are 56 women who competed in this year's pageant.

For the special awards, TingJia Lorogiano is People's Choice Award. Chanel Beckenlehner is Miss Elegance and Audience Favourite. Xiao Sun is Best in Runway while Cristina Heslenfeld is Best in Swimwear.

Have you noticed it again? Even the winners of the minor awards are not pure Canadians. Well, this means Canada is a melting pot of all nationalities around the world.

Her Interview in Miss Thailand Universe 2009

The 1st interview for top twelve;

Host: You have studied abroad for a long time and, according to your profile, you did many activities: singing, dancing, and so many other activities. But one of your most favorite things is doing meditation which is hardly practiced among teenagers nowadays. The question is how do you get on your activity and what benefits do you have got?

Contestant: I always do meditation. I keep considering in my mind to be aware of things coming out of my deeper self. This benefits our daily life in society because we can run up against all disturbances by deliberating myself. Suppose one says bad words to you (the host) you can stop fighting back or any arguments by letting your bad emotion die away immediately.

Host: How do you consider your present state of mind?

Contestant: I'm feeling proud of myself and feeling great of being the top twelve, so I would like to thank all judges who voted for me. Thank you!

Host: She shows the advantages of doing mediation as she can answer the questions very well!

The 2nd interview for top five:

Host: If you were a part of a big tree which consists of many parts, such as branches, leaves, roots, or a trunk, which part is chosen representing yourself, and why?

Contestant: If I were a part of a big tree, I would select to be a root because a tree can't live without roots. In addtion, I prefer being a giver to a receiver. My inspiration of being a giver is my mom: she has given me everything. I can stand here because of her doing much for me. On this stage, Miss Thailand Universe, I wanna say I love you so much, mom, thank you.

Zuleyka Rivera

Zuleyka Jerrís Rivera Mendoza (born October 3, 1987 in Cayey, Puerto Rico, and raised in Salinas, Puerto Rico) is a Puerto Rican beauty queen who held the titles Miss Puerto Rico Universe 2006 and Miss Universe 2006. She made her debut as a telenovela actress in Telemundo's soap opera Dame Chocolate.

After competing in swimsuit, evening gown and interview, she was crowned Miss Universe by outgoing titleholder Natalie Glebova of Canada.

Later that evening, Rivera fainted briefly during a press appearance. The incident was reportedly attributed to heat exhaustion (from the stage lights) coupled with the weight of the heavy, chained dress she was wearing. However this caused controversy as many believed her fainting was due to malnutrition.

Rivera was the fifth Puerto Rican to win the title, which makes the island, along with Venezuela (2008) the second most successful entity in the pageant (behind the United States). Prior to Rivera's win, Puerto Rico had been tied with Venezuela, with each having won the pageant four times. Rivera was the third consecutive delegate from Puerto Rico to make the top five at Miss Universe, after Alba Reyes placed second runner-up at Miss Universe 2004 and Cynthia Olavarría was first runner-up at Miss Universe 2005.

Rivera's win came only five years after Denise Quiñones, the most recent winner from Puerto Rico, won the crown. As Miss Universe, Rivera represented the Miss Universe Organization, both in the United States and internationally. She was based in New York City, where she shared an apartment with Tara Conner, Miss USA and Katie Blair, Miss Teen USA 2006.

The final interview round was a tough selection; the strongest delegates who managed the Top 5 were Cynthia Olavarria of Puerto Rico, Laura Elizondo of Mexico, Renata Sone of Dominican Republic, and Monica Spear of Venezuela, who were all considered to be pageant powerhouses. At the conclusion of the pageant, Glebova survived the Latin onslaught and was crowned Miss Universe 2005 by outgoing titleholder Jennifer Hawkins of Australia.
